The Challenges

The Benton County Wind Farm spans 9,000 acres in Benton & Newton Counties in Indiana.  During construction the IEA team assisted owners with local, state and federal permitting in order to achieve commercial operation on-time.  Many foundation designs were altered to address the shallow water table and soil conditions on-site.  The project utilized 87 GE SLE 1.5-MW turbines and now produces enough electricity to power approximately 42,000 homes annually.

PROJECT SCOPE OF WORK

  • Engineering design, procurement, and construction of civil and electrical system BOP
  • Construction of 21 miles of access roads, five acres of laydown yard, and 38 miles of underground collector system
  • 6.2 miles of 138 kV transmission line
  • Spread-footer foundations, poured in-place concrete construction with steel reinforcement
  • 138 kV/34.5 kV substation and interconnect switchyard
  • Construction of operations and maintenance buildings
  • Fiber optics communication and SCADA network
