The Challenges

The Locust Ridge Project was constructed on reclaimed surface mine which required specialized rock anchor foundations as the location was deemed unsuitable for conventional spread-footer foundations.  Additionally IEA integrated PPL, PJM and Iberdrola SCADA systems that will be controlled from Spain.  The project consists of 64 Gamesa 2.0 megawatt turbines and now produces enough electricity to power 37,000 homes annually.

PROJECT SCOPE OF WORK

  • Performed engineering and construction of civil roads and AG/UG electrical system BOP
  • Performed rock anchor foundation construction
  • Completed erection and in-tower wiring of turbines
  • Designed and constructed 69/34.5 kV substation
  • Designed and constructed 29 miles of underground 34.5-kV collector system and fiber optic communication system and SCADA network
  • Upgraded and improved existing mine roads
  • Designed and constructed 16 miles of access roads
