Advancing Within: Michael Mallory
“I want to be the best version of myself in this position.”
Six years ago, Michael Mallory was working on a White Construction wind farm in Cameron, MO. Now, he’s the Senior Civil Safety Manager for the White Construction Civil Division.
Michael Mallory is a man with many tasks; he oversees all safety and training for White Construction Civil team, spanning the greater parts of Indiana and Illinois. Safety is vital to our processes and being proactive is critical in preventing accidents. For this reason, Mallory receives and investigates incident reports to find a root cause, preventing incidents of the same nature. He provides projects with tangible resources for continued improvement and works to eliminate incidents before they occur. Additionally, he’s active in assisting with safety Empower posts, managing injuries and collaborating with other safety managers across the IEA family of companies.
“I enjoy the training aspect of it the most,” said Mallory. “If I give the tools for them [IEA employees] to be successful in the field, I feel accomplished.”
At the start of his career with IEA, Mallory was in Missouri working as a site safety specialist for a White Construction wind farm. An Indiana University graduate, Mallory had been in sales for an investment company for about six years prior and needed a change.
“I didn’t have a ton of safety experience, but IEA saw potential in me and allowed me to have a career change when I needed it,” said Mallory.
White Construction was working on about 14 projects and none were close to the Indianapolis area, so Mallory hit the road. For nearly three years he worked in seven different states, acting as the safety specialist at ten different wind and solar projects.
In late 2018, he was given an opportunity to work at IEA’s corporate office. White Construction’s civil department was expanding and they needed a civil safety manager. Michael Mallory was the man for the job. Since coming in from the field, he’s been promoted to his current title of senior civil safety manager.
Ever since, Mallory’s been in the business of becoming a well-decorated employee with numerous safety certifications. In the safety world, certifications are highly regarded, showing you’re qualified and motivated. Currently, Mallory holds four Board of Certified Safety Professional Certifications, one being the Certified Safety Professional (CSP), widely recognized as a top certification.
“I want to be the best version of myself in this position, this was a great way to do it,” he said.
Mallory is quick to attribute the ability to invest and grow with IEA.
“We [IEA] have a culture of competitive nature of gaining and achieving certifications,” said Mallory. “IEA supported me through these certifications as well as attending conferences to gain knowledge.”
Mallory’s journey from the field to a senior manager is one to look up to – it’s never too late to change your career trajectory. He expresses that loyalty to a company goes both ways and he won’t be letting down his end of the bargain.
“I’m never leaving this place, they’re going to have to push me out,” said Mallory.
