Alex Jones: The best of both worlds
Alex Jones, Saiia Project Engineer, has truly lived life to the absolute fullest. Up for any challenge, she has experienced many interests throughout her life, from cheer and makeup to fishing and hunting. Whatever it is, Jones has always embraced everything with a smile on her face. As she grew up with the best of both worlds, she desired the same within her career.
“As I began thinking about my future, I knew I wanted to do something that allowed me to be in the office and outside, which led me to be a project engineer,” said Jones.
While attending university for her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in Birmingham, AL, she also worked through Saiia’s Co-Op program. Although most participants could only commit part-time, Jones had the privilege of attending regularly because of her proximity to Saiia.
After graduating in 2020, Saiia saw the great work Jones was doing as an intern, and they decided to offer her a full-time position with the company. Since beginning with Saiia in 2018, Jones has been promoted and continues to advance into leadership roles.
To reach these milestones, Jones has had many inspirations, especially within her family. She is reminded of her mother's influence on her personal life and career.
“She's very strong-minded. She's very independent, and I like that,” said Jones. “I like being independent. I like doing things on my own, and I learned that from her.”
Independence is something that Jones takes after her mother, and as she came into the traditionally male-dominated construction industry, she possessed no hesitation and wanted to ensure that all stereotypes were disregarded.
Knowing her worth and the company culture of Saiia, she knew she would be treated with dignity and equality.
“I've been treated with nothing but respect in this industry. It's been great so far,” said Jones.
On top of this, the growth Jones has discovered because of working at Saiia is unmatched. Her confidence, knowledge and skills have all been sharpened because of her position. She values this outcome and looks forward to even more career developments such as these in the future.
“Working at Saiia has been very rewarding. It’s helped me be more confident, stand my ground, speak up when I have something to say and not back down,” said Jones.
While one can learn from doing work, it’s also essential to learn from those previously in your shoes.
Jones recalls a close relationship she shared with a project manager named Kay on a project. They shared their experiences being women in the industry. Kay advised Jones and guided her as she started working in the field.
Jones remembers Kay's influence on her and hopes to one day be in a position where she can work her way up to a project manager position to mentor individuals, especially women starting off with Saiia, once like herself.
